The Kite Runner 3

In the book The Kite Runner by Khaled Hoseini the main character, Amir, has to evacuate his hometown of Kabul with his father because it was in war. He and his father escape to Pakistan then move to America. Once they get to America they live on the poor side but are happy. Once Baba dies and Amir has settled into his married life with Sorarya he gets a call from Pakistan from his father's best friend, and his mentor, Rahim Khan. The next week he flies to Pakistan and finds Rahim Khan quite close to, if not on his death bed. Rahim Khan, after telling him the story of what happened to Amir's childhood best friend, Hassan and has one request for Amir, to go retrieve Hassan's orphaned son.

As the reader you are led to think that Amir will do anything for Hassan later in life after all they've been through. Why Amir is hesitant to getting Hassan's son, obviously the dead man's pride and joy, troubles me. I think that everything Hassan ever did in his life was an action that somehow benefited Amir and the fact that Hassan even died trying to protect Amir and Amir won't even take in Hassan's son upsets me greatly. I believe that over the course of Amir's life he made many terrible mistakes regarding what he said and did to Hassan. He had been bullying him since they were children but Hassan always seemed to look past that, Hassan never got mad at Amir and never laid a finger on him either. Hassan always stood up for Amir and looked out for him, the last time he did it he died doing it as well. Hassan was always a loyal and trustworthy friend, he was even more than that and when Amir tries to refuse a dying Rahim Khan to saving Hassan's son it really shows something about Amir. It shows how devoted and heartless he can be, it is really quite saddening.

I believe that the relationship between Amir and Hassan is difficult because of all they've been through. Hassan has always looked up to Amir in a way and Amir has always known that and sort of took advantage of it in their youth. Hassan was not only loyal but he was always striving to do better, to please Amir more. I think that at this point Amir should to anything to repay his loyal friend and adopting his son, who already knows of Amir is the least he can do.

This book has had a lot of ups and downs with the different relationships between the characters. In most ways Amir is the only one that survived this brutal time and he has to live on bearing secrets that he can never loose. Amir has been put in a difficult situation due to the stuff he went through in the past and I do not think that anything that he can do now will help in any way redeem himself but the least he can do is take in Hassan's son and treat him like his own. I hope Amir comes to his senses and realizes this soon.
